Kusama arrived in the United States, from Japan, in 1957 rapidly establishing herself among the New York avant-garde. Gaining international attention during the 1960s with her paintings, sculpture, installations, poems and novels, performances and film, her powerful presence has been an influence and inspiration for subsequent generations of artists. Her works are included in private, public and museum collections worldwide. An exhibition of her recent work titled Kusamatrix was exhibited at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo in 2004. Kusama was also included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. She is represented in New York by the Robert Miller Gallery.
